Distinguished and Famous people from Bland
Bland Shire's notable connections include a footballing family from Ungarie and an artist whose visit transformed West Wyalong's main street into a major painting. Their local stories are preserved in very different kinds of public artwork.
🏅 The Daniher brothers
Terry, Neale, Anthony and Chris Daniher grew up in Ungarie and all went on to league football. In 1990 they appeared together for Essendon in a senior match, an exceptional family occasion commemorated by Ungarie's Big Football. Their combined careers ran to hundreds of games. Neale later became a founder of FightMND, raising awareness and money for research into motor neurone disease. The local monument honours the family's sporting story, while the charity's activities have also recognised Ungarie as their hometown.
🎨 Sir Russell Drysdale
Russell Drysdale visited West Wyalong in 1949 with his lawyer friend John Nagle. While Nagle worked, Drysdale sketched courtroom scenes and drew the main street from outside Tattersall's Hotel. The visit led to West Wyalong, one of his best-known paintings of an Australian country town. His association is an identifiable episode of artistic work, rather than local birth or long residence. The town's easel sculpture commemorates that moment of looking closely at a familiar street.
